I was checking the car fluid on my girlfriend's RAV4. The hood was so heavy I thought it was still latched. Why is it so heavy? Sound proofing? Pedestrian protection?

Totally with you. I’m sick and tired of lesser men conversing on here.

No struts or springs? The hood on my and my wife's Mazda6s are notably heavier/harder to lift than that of the Volvo 760 I had, which had a hood so light-seeming it could be lifted with a pinky, and closed with the sound of a personal safe, a nice, solid thunk. However it had two struts to ease and support, whereas the Mazdas have just the hinge and a prop rod (and I'd like to find out if I can get a strut conversion because I hate prop rods, as they get in the way and require too much effort.

I’m used to lifting the aluminum hood on my FR-S, bro.

Because Toyota didnt think people would ever lift the hood up.
Old saying, “the lighter the hood the more often you’ll have it up.”
